It was only on the final tour by an England side that the visiting players were faced with outright hostility. The tour took place at a time when the policy of apartheid was finally being dismantled and FW de Klerk both lifted the ban on the ANC and freed Nelson Mandela. The 1990/-91 tour was cancelled as a consequence.
