Jardine’s difficult relationship with Australian crowds went back to the 1928/29 tour when, his manner perceived by them to be cool and aloof, he was mercilessly barracked. A quiet, reserved man, not without humour, the cricketers he captained, though some disapproved of his tactics, admired his leadership, intelligence and determination.
