Portrait of Alfred Mynn (1807-1861), circa 1850 William Bromley (fl. 1835-1888) Oil on canvas Known as the ‘Lion of Kent’, Alfred Mynn is shown here with long curly golden sideburns under his flat cricket cap. Mynn played for Kent, the All-England XI and the Gentlemen. He was the greatest all-round cricketer of his day and was supreme at single wicket. ‘It was considered one of the greatest sights at cricket to see Mynn advance and deliver the ball…His bowling was very fast and ripping, round-armed and of good length’. In 1836 he scored 283 in two consecutive matches, in the second of which he was so severely injured by Redgate’s bowling that he was in danger of losing a leg. He was a member of the first overseas touring team, which visited North America in the autumn of 1859. Greatly beloved, his epitaph by W. J. Prowse is printed in nearly every anthology of cricket verse which is available in the MCC Library. British historical painter William Bromley was from a family of engravers. He painted many well-known figures from the early game. MCC Collections: Donation, J H Dark TN.2008.2323
