William Bromley Portrait of Alfred Mynn Oil on canvas circa 1850 Known as the ‘Lion of Kent’, Mynn played for Kent, the All-England Eleven and the Gentlemen. He was the greatest all-round cricketer of his day and was supreme at single wicket. ‘It was considered one of the greatest sights at cricket to see Mynn advanced and deliver the ball…His bowling was very fast and ripping, round-armed and of good length’. Between 1834 and 1859 he played 99 matches for Kent. In 1836 he scored 283 in two consecutive matches, in the second of which he was so severely injured by Redgate’s bowling that he was in danger of losing a leg. He was a member of the first overseas touring team, which visited North America in the autumn of 1859. Greatly beloved, his epitaph by W. J. Prowse is printed in neatly every anthology of cricket verse which is available in the MCC library.
