William Bromley Portrait of John Wisden Oil on canvas 70 x 54.5 cm circa 1850 Wisden is one the most famous names in all sport. Playing for Sussex County Cricket Club from 1845 to 1863 as well as Middlesex and Kent. He toured the United States and Canada in 1859 with George Parr’s side. However, he is best remembered as the founder of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack in 1864. The Almanack has appeared every year since then, including during both world wars. William Bromley, son of an artist and grandson of a prominent engraver, exhibited widely throughout his long career at the Society of British Artists (Suffolk Street), the Royal Academy and the British Institution.
