Description

Pottery jug, one of a set of six showing a portrait of cricketer; c.1930. No.3. J.B. Hobbs, walking out from pavilion. Newhall pottery, white underglaze. Flagon-shaped body with flattened sides to take portrait panel. Decoration: two half-tone transfers with naturalistic colouring. (1) crest made up of laurel spray and grey shield bearing design of crossed bats, wicket and balls in field setting. (2) in laurel framed oval, autographed painting of the cricketer during a match with background of either of the two ends of the cricket field. (Pavilion or spectators against rail). Printed on base in green: Newhall, Hanley, England. Trade mark with castle. (blue border and another brown not blue border described on ERW index card)
