Description

Makeshift cricket bat with sloped shoulders cut out of a plank of wood. Three hotel labels on the striking face.

Display caption

This makeshift bat was constructed in an Italian internment camp. It was signed by Sir Ronald Campbell and other internees in Italy on June 11th 1941. It bears stickers from three 'albergi’ (hotels) in the town of Chianciano Bagni which is close to Montepulciano in Tuscany. Sir Ronald Ian Campbell was British Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Yugoslavia; he and the staff of the British Consulate were interned by the Italians before repatriation to Britain in 1941.
