Display caption

This cannonball is one of two donated to MCC from the first battle of the Crimean War (1853-1856), when Anglo-French and Russian forces fought at the crossing of the River Alma. This cannon ball may be from a Russian gun defending the heights on the east side of the Alma. Quite why they were donated is something of a mystery, although there is reference to cricket being played in the Crimea between the Guards division and the `Leg of Mutton’ Club (a team from other regiments).
