Display caption

Portrait of Herbert Sutcliffe (1894 – 1978), c.1930 Jacob Kramer (1892 – 1962) Pastel on paper Yorkshire and England opening batsman Herbert Sutcliffe is famous for his opening partnerships with Jack Hobbs and the young Len Hutton, forged with a notable blend of concentration and grit. He was renowned therefore as a `bad wicket’ batsman but did in fact enjoy the hard wickets of Australia too, with an outstanding record on his three tours. His first-class career spanned the period between the two world wars almost exactly, during which time Yorkshire won the Championship twelve times. Ukrainian-born painter Jacob Kramer spent all of his working life in England and attended the Slade School of Art in 1914, exhibiting at the Whitechapel Gallery alongside avant-garde artists such as David Bomberg, Jacob Epstein, Mark Gertler, CRW Nevinson, William Roberts (whose sister, Sarah, he later married) and Edward Wadsworth. However with the excitement and edge of modern art blunted by the horrors of the Great War, he retreated to Leeds and settled into a portrait practice as a member of the Leeds Arts Club and a tutor at Leeds School of Art.
