Portrait of Herbert Sutcliffe (1894 – 1978), circa 1930 Jacob Kramer (1892 – 1962) Pastel on paper Yorkshire and England opening batsman Herbert Sutcliffe is known for his opening partnerships with Jack Hobbs and the young Len Hutton. His first-class career spanned the period between the two world wars and his last tour (1932–33) included the controversial Bodyline series, named thus because of England’s tactic of bowling short on the line of leg stump. Ukrainian-born painter Jacob Kramer spent all of his working life in England. He was a member of the Leeds Arts Club and taught art at Leeds School of Art. MCC Collections TN.2008.146
