Description

Navy blue, MCC touring blazer. Gold and red braid to edge, collar, cuffs and pockets. Three brass buttons, two on cuffs. Five pockets. Embroidered MCC emblem on breast pocket, white St George & Dragon of England and below in scroll '1954-Australia-1955'. ‘J.H. Wardle' handwritten to inner pocket label. Australian stamp found in pocket, also Yorkshire Mining Museum comp slip

John Henry Wardle. Yorkshire & England 1946-1958. M.C.C. navy blue touring blazer, by Simpson of Piccadilly, worn by Wardle on the M.C.C. tour of Australia & New Zealand in 1954/55. With embroidered M.C.C. emblem in white of St George & Dragon of England and below in scroll '1954-Australia-1955' to breast pocket. Trimming/braid to blazer, pockets and sleeves in M.C.C. colours of yellow and red. 'J.H. Wardle' handwritten to inner pocket label. Slight fading to parts of trimming and very minor moth holes otherwise in good condition. Sold with his M.C.C. touring tie in good condition and an official photograph of the M.C.C. touring party, sitting and standing in rows, showing Wardle wearing this blazer for the official photograph. Title to top and players names to lower border. 12.5"x10.5", some staining to lower border. Qty 3 - cricket Estimate: £250/350 Hammer price: £750 Wardle played in four of the five Tests with limited results, his highlight match was the 5th Test at Sydney where he took eight wickets in the match including 5-79 in the first innings. He bowled the most overs on the tour, 3153 taking 57 wickets at an average of 20.45
