Description

Right hand, child’s batting glove. One of a pair. Four brown leather sausages with white suede ‘knuckles’ on brown suede base. Leather loops to secure fingers. Thumb hooks through leather loop on side. Elastic loop around wrist. Makers label on inner face. Initials written on label.

Gloves 5.1 Gloves are vitally important to protect delicate fingers from injuries that could curtail a player’s season. The artist Nicholas ‘Felix’ Wanostrocht is credited with inventing India-rubber batting gloves during the 19th century. Our earliest examples are made of individual sausages of padded leather attached to the fingers with straps or elastic. They came in adult and child sizes.
