Protection 6.1 Mike Brearley discusses the use of a fairly comprehensive set of protective equipment in his book ‘The Art of Captaincy’. Highlighting his interest in all things psychological, he poses the question ‘Did cricketers start to wear protection because the bowlers got faster, or did the bowlers get faster because the protective equipment released them from the fear of hurting the batsman?
