Between September 2002 and March 2003 some 20,000 tons of heavy clay soil were removed from the outfield and replaced by with layers of soil, gravel and fine sand. The resulting outfield offered greatly improved drainage, minimising the amount of play lost to wet conditions. The square itself was undisturbed and the famous Lord’s slope retained as part of the ground’s distinct character.
