Portrait of Kapil Dev (1959-), 2008 Stuart Pearson Wright (1975-) Oil and flock on canvas Former Indian captain Kapil Dev depicted on pitch at The Brabourne Stadium posing in formal shoes tossing a ball. A prolific swing bowler and stylish, aggressive batter, Kapil Dev captained India to victory over the dominant West Indies in the 1983 Men’s Cricket World Cup Final at Lord’s. It was a match that inspired huge enthusiasm for the limited overs game in India with huge implications for the future of cricket. He and his team became national heroes. Commissioned to honour the 75th anniversary of the first All India Test tour to England in 1932, MCC sent artist Stuart Pearson Wright to Mumbai to create portraits of three of India’s most prolific players. Wright, inspired by Surrealism, constructed many strange elements in this picture including the abstracted hand in motion, tilted pitch and bright electric sunlight.
