Waterford Crystal The MCC Waterford Crystal Ashes Trophy Crystal on wooden base The official Ashes Trophy, presented to the winning captain and retained by the winning country until the following Ashes series. The trophy was first presented to Australian captain Mark Taylor at the end of the 1998-1999 series. Prior to that no official trophy had existed for the Ashes series. The original urn having become the symbol of the series, by the 1990s there was considerable public demand for a trophy that could be presented to the winning team and travel regularly between the two countries. This demand had led to the creation of ‘alternative’ urns at various stages. In acknowledging this demand, MCC also wished to retain a link with the original urn, hence the creation of an official trophy in its image. MCC Collection: commissioned, 1998 TN.2009.3448
