The I Zingari club played two fixtures in its first season but by 1852 had played in Ireland and Scotland. 1866 saw them play their first first-class fixture against a Gentlemen of the South team which included WG Grace, while they were regular participants of the Scarborough Festival from 1877 to 1890 and played the Australians during the Australians’ tours of England in 1882. The club played its last first-class match, against Gentlemen of England at Lord’s, in 1904, but as of 2014 are still active – touring Rajasthan, the Gulf, Argentina, Chile, Singapore and Malaysia between 2001 and 2005. Famous names to have represented I Zingari include Sir Pelham Warner, FR Brown, RES Wyatt, DR Jardine, Sir GOB Allen, while Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh is a member as was King George V and VI, and King Edward VII and VIII. The club’s archive is held at Lord’s.
