Description

Darnall Cricket Ground Member's Admission Ticket, 1825-1829. Brass, circular, in wooden frame, gilded. velvet lined. Designs: obverse: inscribed: Darnall Cricket Ground; the initials: [o] W [C] or [6]; reverse: cricket emblems; inscribed: Grand Match Admission Ticket; also, incised: intitials W.H.W. Below the ticket is a label, inscribed Member's Ticket/Darnall 1825-29/W.H.W. = W.H. Woolhouse/The Proprietor. On paper backing the frame is inscribrd in E. Rockley Wilson's hand: The first ground at Darnall/near Sheffield was opened by /George Stear in 1821/In 1824 he opened the new Ground/at Darnall where many great matches were played 1825-9. In 1825 W.H. Woolhouse who/had married Stear's daughter/became proprietor. (He was a fine left/hand bat himself/The famous Sussex v England/match was played there in 1827/the first of three matches between/the new 'Sussex' bowling or'roundarm'/and the old 'underhand'. Sussex won the/first two matches)/. In 1829 Woolhouse became proprietor of the Hyde Park Ground (1 mile/from city) which displaced Darnall as/the scene of the Great Matches. Darnall was too far from the city (3 miles). The metal ticket is extremely rare. Also on back a ticket marked: 44.
