Description

Eleven of England handkerchief, 1847, ivory cotton, printed in dark brown and red, framed. After a portrait group by N. Wanostrocht (Felix), 1847; and illustrations from his book 'Felix on the Bat' 1845. Design: in the centre is a group of the eleven; this version has the players' names printed underneath, as follows: W. Denison , Esq., Clarke, Martingell, Pilch, Lillywhite, Parr, N. Felix, Esq., Guy, Hillier, O.C. Pell, Esq., Dorrington, A. Mynn, Esq., Sewell, Dean. Above the group is the inscription: To the Admirers of/the Noble Game of Cricket. The group is composed of the same figures but in different order as appear in a lithograph of N. Felix portrait group: 'The Eleven of England - selected to contend in the Great Cricket Matches of the North for the year 1847'. The six action pictures in the border are adaptions of drawings by G.F. Watts of Felix and others which Felix drew to illustrate his book 'Felix on the Bat', of which the frontpiece is also reproduced (top centre), with the title added. The writing is from the current Laws of Cricket.
