Although M.C.C. were strongly supportive of Douglas Jardine during the “Bodyline” crisis, seeing Bodyline bowling by both sides during the England v West Indies 1933 Test series convinced M.C.C. that it should be removed from the game. They condemned “direct attack”, defined as “fast, short-pitched balls at the batsman standing clear of his wicket”, and instructed the umpires to deal with such bowling under law 43, which covered unfair play.
