Lord Sheffield was a great patron of cricket in both England and Australia. In 1891 he organized an England team to tour Australia, recruiting the 43 year old Grace to lead the team. Grace, technically an amateur, negotiated a £3,000 fee for the tour, plus first-class expenses, invitations for his wife and children and a locum to run his medical practice in England while on tour.

William Gilbert Grace (owner) 1891 - 1892
