Portrait of Michael Atherton (1968-), 2000 Andy Pankhurst (1968-) Oil on canvas Seated on a cold day, made to look like summer, former England captain Michael Atherton is depicted in front of the Lord’s Pavilion, by figurative painter Andy Pankhurst. The portrait was commissioned in the same year he and England team-mate Alec Stewart jointly reached their landmark of 100 Test matches. A stubborn opening batsman for Lancashire and England, Atherton captained his country 54 times at Test level. His 185* at Johannesburg in 1995, when he resisted the South African attack for almost 11 hours is considered one of the greatest match-saving innings of all time. Although he passed 50 seven times in 15 Tests at Lord’s, he never made it to three figures; the closest he came being against Australia in 1993, when he was run out for 99. Since retiring as a player he has become a highly-respected journalist and broadcaster. Andy Pankhurst, commissioned to paint the twin portraits, was also the MCC Young Artist of the Year documenting England’s tour of Australia in 2002-03. MCC Collections: Commission, 2000 M.2000.TN.103
