Former captain of Essex and England Graham Gooch is painted here flushed and perspiring under his MCC sweater and England blazer by Scottish artist Ishbel Myerscough.
Painted entirely from life, this gritty ‘warts and all’ portrait must have seemed rather adventurous in contrast to the other more traditional portraits in the Collection prior to 1992.
Commissioned ten years before the Lord’s Portrait Project was conceived, it inspired the Arts & Library Committee to commission more adventurous works of art that moved away from the conventional board-room painting of a suit at a desk.
It is hoped that this new series of portraits, on display here, can be appreciated as a work of art in its own right that gives the spectators a 'behind the scenes' glimpse into the personalities of these cricket stars.
