A Cricket Match at Kenfield Hall, c. 1775
British School
Kenfield Hall is shown here as an integral aspect of the English landscape. The careful recording of the hall and well wooded park led Brian Johnston (the famed broadcaster and one time inhabitant of Kenfield) to confirm the topography.
Kenfield Hall in Petham, near Canterbury was built with an extensive walled garden. The owner at the time, a Mr Thomas, was an enthusiastic plant collector and gardener who opened up his gardens for many to enjoy. Here a sign ‘Welcome’ hangs on the wall and a game of cricket is in progress in the park.
The cricket match in the foreground gives way to the artist’s fascination with the nuances of light and the contrasting weather conditions, the cricket pitch is half in sunlight half in shade created by the dark clouds and silhouetted oak tree, right.
