Nothing is known about the artist of this picture, apart from his name, but his depiction of a game of cricket in the middle of the 19th century is beautifully realised. With a white-towered church to the left and houses beyond; an assembled crowd, uniformly well-dressed, grouped to the right and others strolling along a path to the left, the scene suggests semi-urban parkland. The location of the scene has never been identified, although two flags bearing the initials “L.C.C.” – one blue on the third man boundary and one red at fine leg – offer a tantalising clue
