This portrait of Douglas Jardine seated wearing a navy blue MCC touring blazer with its distinctive scarlet and gold trim was painted by British artist Herbert A. Olivier, who was one of the official war artists prior to this commission.
Douglas Jardine played first class cricket for Oxford University, Surrey, and England, captaining the latter 15 times, losing only one Test. He averaged 48 in his 22 Test matches, touring Australia twice. His second tour in 1932-1933 was christened by the Australian press ‘Bodyline’ due to the method of fast bowling used to counteract the brilliant Australian batsman Sir Donald Bradman.
