Oil on canvas
This portrait of Miller wearing an Royal Australian Air Force tie with white ‘wings’ motifs, seated on a Lord’s Long Room chair and flanked by two black and white photographic action shots is by British portraitist Michael Corkrey.
Keith Miller first played at Lord’s in 1943, but it was during the golden summer of 1945, following his service as a mosquito pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force, that he is perhaps best remembered with his stunning performances in the ‘Victory Tests’. At Lord’s alone he produced innings of 105, 71 not out and 118 for Australian Services, then struck a masterly innings of 185 for the Dominions.
It was the beginning of a lifelong love affair with the ground, of which he later wrote, ‘The day you walk through an applauding Long Room at Lord’s it seems as if you have had a hallmark stamped on your career.’
