Display caption

This portrait of Lord Harris wearing a cream waistcoat and ‘Band of Brothers’ bow tie is painted by Royal Academician Arthur Hacker, known for painting religious scenes and portraits. Lord Harris, the fourth Baron Harris, first played at Lord’s for Eton against Harrow in 1868. His last match here was for MCC against Indian Gymkhana in 1929. He played for Kent from 1870 to 1911 and captained England in four Test matches. A highly respected and influential administrator, Harris served as President of MCC in 1895, Trustee from 1906 to 1916 and Treasurer from 1916 until his death in 1932. Always determined to uphold the laws and spirit of the game, he wrote a famous letter to the Times on his 80th birthday in which he stated that cricket was ‘more free from anything sordid, anything dishonourable, than any game in the world.’ In 1921 he dedicated his memoirs to the Gentlemen of MCC ‘and to their ground: Lord’s, the Home of Cricket.’
