Thomas Lord, c.1825 Formerly attributed to George Morland (1763-1804) MCC Collection: presented by Miss Florence Lord, 1931 Oil on canvas TN.2009.2377 This head and shoulders portrait of Thomas Lord wearing a black cloak and white cravat was presented to the Club by his granddaughter Florence Lord in 1931. Thomas Lord was born a Yorkshireman though the family moved to Diss in Norfolk where Thomas was educated. He then came to London and, in forging a business as a wine merchant, was asked by certain gentlemen of the White Conduit Club in Islington to find them a new and more private cricket ground. Beginning in Dorset Square, Lord established the successive grounds settling on the present site in 1814. On retirement he sought to sell off a large portion of the ground for development and it was only through the auspices of William Ward, a governor of the Bank of England, that the Ground was saved for the Club.
