Scope and Content
Correspondence between the Curator (Diana Rait Kerr), J E Peckover and G Neville Weston relating to W G Grace, photograph identification and cricket in the USA. Subjects include collection of magazines and cuttings donated by J E Peckover, Peckover’s promotion of an MCC vs. USA match, enquiry to G Neville Weston regarding the identification of the wicketkeeper in the background of a cutting of a tailors advertisement featuring a photograph of W G Grace in the New York Times newspaper, enquiry to the Bettmann Archive regarding the photograph from the advertisement, erroneous response from the Bettmann Archive which had titled the photograph “First appearance of the GOM of cricket; the match between Philadelphia and Sutton CC. Doctor Grace and Mr J P Dorman keeping wicket”, identification by G Neville Weston of the photograph as being taken at the match played at Sutton on 21 August 1912 between the local club and Philadelphia Cricket Club, G Neville Weston enquiring as the whereabouts of the scorebook containing W G Grace’s last innings which had been reported in Wisden as belonging to the MCC. File contains newspaper clipping of the advertisement from the New York Times with a picture of W G Grace.
